The Surigao region is a major nickel producing district, and there are at least ten direct shipping ore (DSO) nickel laterite mines either in production or being developed. There are two main nickel laterite belts in the Surigao District- an eastern coastal belt that is held by a variety of companies and a western coastal belt, which is a region largely controlled by Mindoro. Much of the Surigao District nickel laterite provides DSO to processing plants in Japan, Australia and China. However, an improved generation of HPAL plants, currently being used with great success by Sumitomo and partner Nickel Asia on their Philippine Coral Bay operation, shows considerable promise for the local processing of Surigao ores. Of major significance is the recent commencement of construction by Sumitomo / Nickel Asia of a HPAL processing operation at Taganito in the eastern Surigao District, which will produce 30,000 tonnes of nickel product per annum. This will launch the Surigao District into the ranks of globally important nickel processing camps. Mindoro's nickel laterite projects/prospects include the Agata Nickel Laterite resource and a number of nickel laterite prospects on its northern Surigao Projects, including the Bolobolo, Karihatag, San Jose, Tapian, Can-aga, Villariza, and Mat-I nickel laterite prospects.

On the Agata Project, Mindoro has a National Instrument (NI) NI 43-101 indicated and measured resource estimate of 26.92 million dry metric tonnes (DMT), at 1.11 percent nickel and 0.06 percent cobalt with an additional 3.79 million DMT in the inferred category at 1.06 percent Ni and 0.05 percent cobalt, at 0.5 percent Ni cutoff for the limonite and 0.8 percent cutoff for the saprolite. The application of microwave technique in the hydrometallurgy of nickel laterite ores was described. The mixture of nickel laterite ores and sulfuric acid was pre-treated by microwave irradiation. The dissolving of nickel was conducted in hot water at the atmospheric pressure. The effects of factors, such as microwave power, microwave irradiation time, and sulfuric acid dosage, were investigated. In microwave field, the migration of ionic species and/or rotation of dipolar species promote the liquid-solid reaction process due to the increased contact area of reactants and leaching reaction rate constant. Thanks to the strengthening action of microwave, the microwave-assisted leaching process has its advantages, such as higher extracting rate than conventional atmospheric leaching, and no need for high-pressure operation as high pressure acid leaching (HPAL). The ferric iron in leaching solution could be effectively removed by sodium jarosite process with a little loss of nickel in the jarosite precipitate.

On a world scale, laterite ores were the earliest sources from which nickel metal was produced. Rich laterite deposits of New Caledonia were exploited starting the end of the nineteenth century. An idealized nickeliferous laterite (see figure) is commonly zoned. There are a range of nickel-bearing phases in the various zones with the fresh protolith and silicate zones dominated by hydrous Mg-Ni silicates (serpentine, talc, chlorite and sepiolite); with smectite clays often present, particularly in the transition and oxide zones (e.g. nontronite, saponite, beidellite, montmorillonite). The oxide zone is dominated by iron oxide/oxy-hydroxides and the mineralogy is commonly grouped under the descriptive name ?limonite? (this comprises goethite, hematite, asbolane, heterogenite etc. in varying amounts). This classification is very simplified and individual profiles are actually highly variable. For example at Çaldag, the hydrous silicate and transition zones are thin to absent and the profile is oxide dominated.

Bioleaching of Ni laterite ores involves the utilisation of fungi organisms and their metabolic products in solubilisation of the metals fractions from ores. High salinity of water supplies and soils in the vicinity of nickel laterite ore bodies is a major abiotic stress to fungi and represents a major challenge in the application of bioleaching process in-situ. To address this issue, Aspergillus foetidus was acclimatised gradually to saline environment to develop its salinity tolerance. The effects of this training on the growth and metabolism of the fungi and leaching behaviour were examined in this study.

Thermodynamic and phase transformation analyses of nickel laterite ores processed in industry have been carried out. The nickel in the laterite ores is principally associated with Fe rich goethite and serpentine particles. The thermodynamic analysis suggests that the nickel recovery from the Fe rich matrix is limited by equilibrium. The nickel recovery from the single phase serpentine/olivine appears to be higher for particles with Mg/Fe molar ratio <8. The nickel partitioning to the alloy phase is sensitive to the change of temperature and oxygen partial pressure both in the case of reduction roasting of Fe rich goethite and serpentine. It has also been shown in the current study that the optimum conditions for high nickel recovery from the Fe rich goethite and serpentine are different.

Mindoro Resources announces drill results from Agata North nickel laterite project in the Philippines
Mindoro Resources Ltd. (TSXV: MIO; Frankfurt: WKN 906167) is pleased to report results for the first 31 drill holes from the Phase 2 drill program on the Agata North Nickel Laterite Project, Philippines. The limonite horizon averages 1.10 percent nickel and 42.55 percent iron over an average thickness of 4.53 meters. The underlying saprolite horizon averages 1.16 percent nickel over an average thickness of 6.66 meters. Grades and thicknesses are consistent with those previously reported and are of potential economic interest. The program confirmed internal continuity of mineralization and is continuing to expand the resource. An updated NI 43-101 resource estimate will be released during August.
